Alan Chao

Designer & Ceramicist

Alan is a designer and ceramicist whose work explores the intersection of traditional craft and digital fabrication.

Alan studied graphic design but has long been drawn toward form and physical objects. Early in his career he worked as an interaction designer at a 3D printing company at the forefront of digital manufacturing. That experience deepened his interest in designing objects in three dimensions and in the evolving relationship between craft and technology.

Alongside that work, Alan has spent a decade working with clay. He began on the wheel, later explored geometric polyhedral sculpture through handbuilding, and eventually developed a focus on mold making and slip casting.

His foundation is in traditional ceramics, and those techniques remain central to his practice. Most recently, he began incorporating digital modeling and 3D printing as tools for developing new forms. Today his pieces are designed digitally and brought into the physical world through traditional ceramic processes—plaster mold making, slip casting, firing, and finishing by hand.

Element Homestead Studio serves as an ongoing creative practice for Alan—a place where new pieces emerge through experimentation, curiosity, and a continuing dialogue between design, craft, and material.
